THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY E. TRAEGER

For God's sake, this woman needs a cool towel for her forehead. She's burning up from the fever, doc. The fever of partisan hate. She's so delirious that she doesn't even know she's contradicting the president she blindly loves.

Traeger, a resident of Forsyth, Mo., is a frequent letter writer to the Springfield News-Leader. As such, she often spouts inflammatory rhetoric designed to provoke a response.

But in Friday's N-L, Traeger seems to have taken a big dive off the high board, right into an empty pool. Normally a right-wing partisan, Traeger must have missed the remarks by President Bush, in which he admitted the feds screwed up their initial response to Hurricane Katrina.

In her highly hilarious rant, Traeger opines:
The media have the inane notion that the federal government has a magic wand that can grant anything. In most national disasters it takes about three days to start helping victims.
Traeger overlooks the "national disaster" that was Sept. 11, 2001; if the feds had waited three days to "start helping victims" at the World Trade Centers, Traeger would have been the first one bitching (of course, she would have found a way to blame Bill Clinton).

Mary, Mary, so contrary. And so far off the radical right's script. Someone get this woman a clue, and fast.

Mary Trager is not the only home-grown Looney in Missouri. We in Jefferson City have our own variant on the species. His name is Mark M. Pavely and he has a rant published at least once a week in the local News Tribune Letters column. Here is his latest, followed by my reply.

Insights of faith

Dear Editor,

After watching the NBC news on September 2, one would think that President George Bush brought on the hurricane that hit New Orleans.
Was it the federal government's job to be the first responders to this disaster or could it possibly have been the responsibility of the mayor of New Orleans assisted by the governor of the state of Louisiana? Both the governor and the mayor acted exceptionally irresponsibly. It is always much easier to blame someone else than accept the responsibility for your own failures.

It is also time to start holding the so-called mainstream news media accountable for its biased reporting. They have shown themselves to be the right-hand of the leftist liberal Democrat party. If this nation is to survive, we must demand the truth from our news media. We saw what happened to Russia with a managed news media. They still haven't recovered from the tyranny of communism. We are in danger of being brainwashed, just as they were.

As a nation we are in danger of losing our own freedom if we do not recognize that for whatever reason, there are those that would like to destroy our way of life. It will not happen as long as we remain a Christian nation. We will remain a Christian nation if we are rooted and grounded in the Word of God.
The following passages give us a little insight into what we should do.

John 8:31 - Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.

John 8:32 - And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Pray for our nation that it wakes up to the truth, which is Jesus Christ - the word of God.

RESPONSE TO PAVELY’S INSIGHTS OF FAITH

Dear Editor,

I think it’s too early for Mr. Pavely to start the blame game concerning FEMA’s or any other government agency’s discouraging response to Katrina. We will have to wait for some sort of a truly bi-partisan post-mortem to definitively sort the whole thing out and I don’t mean Bush’s usual whitewash artists.

I thought it was amazing that some location reporters were actually on the air, live, calling certain federal government officials to task for their misinforming lies and their heartless contempt for the poor, the black and the incapacitated. To me, the fact that these journalists were standing knee-deep in toxic water gave their reports a credibility that no PR release generated behind a comfortable mahogany desk in Washington could ever have.

As with all his previous letters Pavely summarizes with the usual warning that we are in danger of losing our freedoms unless we obliterate the separation between church and state and all “return” to his brand of fanatical Christianity. Yawn!

Let me retort with a few (non Biblical) quotes of my own.

“Christianity...(has become) the most perverted system that ever shone on man.” Jefferson

“During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? …superstition, bigotry, and persecution.” Madison

“Of all the systems of religion that ever were invented, there is no more derogatory to the Almighty, more unedifying to man, more repugnant to reason, and more contradictory in itself than this thing called Christianity” Paine

“The Government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion...This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it.” Adams

“Imagine there’s no religion.” Lennon (not Lenin)

Had enough?

I thought there were supposed to be limits on how often a person could write a letter to the editor. I know if I had a paper, I would limit people to one letter every six months.

I wonder if Leger prints her letters just to get a dialogue started in the letters' column.

Remember the hate filled tirades of Paul Summers that used to appear.

He got old and boring, kept singing the same song, the same with this lady, then someone else will pop up.

Good God Marge, they're all around us!

Pavely's right on target. Maybe we should follow him.
