What about such "lesser acts" as David Bowie? The Eagles? The Greatful Dead? Prince? Or any of a zillion others.

Anon 1: Yes, Rage and Weezer and Tool. The individual leaders of those bands expand music beyond their genres and influence musicians. Beck is in that same category, and I don't mean Jeff. As for your belief that none of "those groups will be remembered even a decade from now as being 'great' in the same league as the 10 others listed" -- c'mon, are you trying to claim Bon Jovi belongs? What's next from you -- clamor for Hall & Oates or Matchbox 20?

No, I'm not suggesting that Bon Jovi belongs on the list, and I'm certainly not pushing Hall & Oates or Matchbox 20 for similar status.
I'm just saying it's really hard to see that Weezer or Tool or Rage has had, or ever will have, anything approaching the cultural impact that MOST of the Planet Rock 10 members have had.
In fairness, I'm completely with you on the Beatles, R.E.M., Young, Police, Rush, Springsteen and, with a nod to our pal above, KISS, too.
And yet...while I love the Foo Fighters, I gotta throw you another "c'mon, man" for suggesting they would belong in a top 10. Dave and the boys make some great noise, but are we really ready to say they're legendary?

Good points you make on Weezer, Tool & Rage. Mike Brothers notes in today's News-Leader that Weezer's latest album "sounded rote compared with past efforts." On balance, he's probably right (though "Perfect Situation" is the tremendous throwback to the days of "Buddy Holly" and "Surf Wax America").
I'm likely letting personal favortism have too much say. I'll exorcise that demon by admitting that Nirvana does not belong in the Top 10. A seminal band, sure, but so was MC5, and they're mostly lost to history and music geeks like us. Cobain's death robbed us of a possible future filled with increasingly raspy and mediocre music. It also gave us Foo Fighters and that band's surprising run of 20-plus charted hits over five albums. Is that worth a Top 10 spot? I think so.

By the "Foo standard" you cite, of 20-plus charted hits over five albums, I guess you'd have to include Abba in your top 10, too.
Along with the Doors...and the Bee Gees...and Sly and the Family Stone...and Creedence...and Fleetwood Mac...
And if that's the standard, you'd be excluding the Sex Pistols, the Clash, Elvis Costello, Cream, yaddy yaddy yaddy....

The ABBA reference -- keesh, right in the heart and you know it. Ear candy addiction coming through. Though, to be fair, ABBA never got to 20 hit singles. Neither did Sly.
Neither did Nirvana, part o' the reason I think Foo Fighters deserves more than a little consideration. The post-ABBA Frida can't say that.
