"Once before, the Constitution was amended to try to deal with matters of human behavior; that was prohibition. That was such a flop that that was repealed 13 years later," Danforth said.
Referring to the marriage amendment, he added that perhaps at some point in history there was a constitutional amendment proposed that was "sillier than this one, but I don't know of one."
The Senate is scheduled to vote in June on a constitutional amendment that its supporters hope will head off any decision in the federal courts that could legalize gay marriage. The measure would need to be approved by two-thirds of those voting in the House and Senate and then be ratified by at least 38 state legislatures.
But Danforth said he is opposed. "The basic concept of the Republican Party is to interpret the Constitution narrowly, not expansively, so that legislatures, and especially state legislatures, can work out over a period of time the social issues in our country," he said.

How sad to see this once-great party sell itself -- not to the devil, but to the "saints" of the extreme right ... a passel of Jesus-hollering bigots who haven't the vaguest notion of what made America great. (Hint: it wasn't the Bible.)
Today's G.O.P. is a pitiful amalgam of the worst excesses of the corporate elite and the religious right. Scary!

I do enjoy watching them fight to micromange our daily existence, though... in a perverted way, it's kinda fun to see the RepubliCrats jockey for position on how to pass yet another law telling us how to live our lives, because they know better and we're just stoopid hairless ape childlike creatures.

The primary goal of the Constitution is to enumerate the very limited and specific powers of the Federal government and place restrictions on what the fedgov can do to states and individuals.
Sad that the RepubliCrats have lost sight of that simple plan...
George W. Bush is firmly against gay marriage because, well, if you let those gays get married, next thing you know they're gonna have gay sex, and next thing you know there's gonna be a world full of gay babies. Can't have that, no sir.

I don't know what Bryan is talking about because no one has touched my pot to stir it, especially not someone of the same sex.
Why such a narrow view of marriage in making it only between two people? Why can we let as many people get married to each other that want to and open it up to Polygamists? I think this country is way too "Polygamyphobic". Maybe someday we will have basic rights for everyone.
