IMMIGRATION CONSTERNATION

Ah, the Wednesday newspaper does not disappoint. So far, so good for new editorial-page editor Tony Messenger; the opinion page has lotsa red meat, especially on the issue of immigration.

An example: This letter from Steve Allen of Springfield, who said the May 1 "day without immigrants" should be duplicated:
We should have many more. Better yet, let's just make it permanent.
The newspaper's forums on the immigration issue are an extension of Allen's succinct bigotry. One thread -- about KSFX offering a Spanish-language newscast -- is awash in guttural cries: The Mexicans are coming! The Mexicans are coming!

Dammit, some of them might be gay, too. Better build that wall around the Queen City.

Yeah every time I try to interject something in that forum I get blasted from the handful of bigots that seem to dominate several topics. One thread is being used as a convenient message board for their creepy activities.

Long as they're LEGAL immigrants, no gripe here... though it galls me that anyone who insists on using the term "illegal immigrant" is some sort of racist pig. Orwell's spinning in his grave.

You know exactly what I mean. Quit trying to twist the issue to suit you. I came to this blog to get away from that.

I'm not twisting anything, and I resent the implication. I'm saying there are those who think being against illegal immigration, is the same as being anti-immigrant... it's like Orwell's "newspeak", and it sucks no matter WHO is doing it.

The process needs to change, we need to deal with the people here now, and we need for ALL sides to stop the nonsense. We're gonna wind up with riots if it keeps up.

We had to put up with that moron Glenn Miller trying to hijack us. I don't like ANY kind of racist assholes, period, no matter what color they are or who they hate.

If you build a wall, they'll just learn to pole vault.

If they haven't learned already, I mean.
