After getting the tip on Tuesday afternoon we rang a couple friends who also know Jacob and dropped the bombshell. The reaction was expected -- complete and utter disbelief, followed by a recognition of the man's fine mettle.
KY3 has the story, of course. Jacob reports for basic training in mid-January.
Absolute truth is a very rare and dangerous commodity in the context of professional journalism. Hunter Thompson said it. Jerry Jacob has lived it.

Personally, I think Jer has lost his freakin' mind. however, not to do something you want to do is a big sin in life.
I just start hurting all over when I think of being screamed at by some 25 year old DI and giving him "25" three times a day. That's just a bit too Clintonesque for my blood.
Knowing Jacobs, he will probably be Army Cheif of Staff before his enlistment is up.
Jerry has hella guts, I gotta give him that. He's really putting himself in harm's way, especially considering the rather cushy post he currently has.
Miss him we will.
When he returns he should run for Roy Blunt's congressional seat.
Jaaaaysuz. I never knew working at KY was quite so bad that it made Iraq look like a good career move. Jaaaaaysuz.
Best of luck, JJ. May you experience few, if any, "WTF was I thinking?" moments at Fort Benning, and elsewhere.
Good Luck, Jerry. We will miss you. I respect your decision and think it is very honorable.
I applaud -- salute might be a better term -- Jerry's bold decision to enlist. Boot camp is designed for men less than half his age, so it's not going to be easy. But I'm betting he'll make it. Hoo-rah.
Now, however, are we back on the homefront home going to have to put up with double or triple the amount of air time for that plasticized KY3 news reader Even Forehead?
Atta boy Jerry.
Kill one for me.
Jerry, I hope someone is throwing you a hell of a going away party.
nice career move.
Wonder whether he'll write a book, get a job with Fox News or run for office?
Much thanks for the comments everyone. Yes, even that bloodthirsty SOB three entries north of this one.
I can't wait to contribute to the Chatter blog from some hellhole in God-knows-where.
Hear from me, you will.
JJ
I'm absolutely shocked. I had no idea Jerry leaned toward military service!
