JIM CARREY'S CAREER CRASH

The once-funny comedian used to demand -- and get -- $20 million a picture. But his Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber days are long dead, and now he's the guy who ruined The Grinch and Lemony Snicket.

The fallout: No more $20 million up front, plus percentage. For his latest project, Yes Man, Carrey has been forced to accept what Deadline Hollywood calls the worst talent deal ever:
He'll receive NO upfront cash and NO first-dollar gross ... Instead, Jim has a cash-break deal in theory of at most 36.2% on the back end -- which in reality may turn out to be a lot less. ...

[G]etting top-tier talent for no money upfront with cash-break back end is like a wet dream for Warner Bros. "This is a deal you make with someone who's star has fallen," a studio source told me tonight. Which is why I've learned that Warner Bros execs were privately patting themselves on the back for coming up with it and then dancing in the hallways when Carrey's reps finally went for it. ...

[M]ovie after movie of his has collapsed in development (Spielberg's The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty remake, 20th's Used Guys, Paramount's Ripley's Believe It Or Not) and his most recent release, New Line's The Number 23, was dead on arrival. Since then, the actor has sat around booking no major movies beyond toon voiceovers (20th's Horton Hears A Who, a sop for the Used Guys deal going south, and Disney's A Christmas Carol directed by Robert Zemeckis) for nearly a year.
We miss "In Living Color."

Kids!!! Let me showyousomething! Fire Marshal Bill here! Wanna watch while I soak myself with pride and light a match!?!?!? Not gonna be pretty. Lousy films. A long channel of chum for the tabloids. Now there's a safety hazard, isn't it, kids?!?!?!

I've never found him funny. I've always thought he was too much of a Rob Williams wanna be.

Mr. Davis snags Joe and Christine! After all these years, KSPR just might be a contender!

Sweet! First KSPR snags Ron; and now it has the Daus duo. This is fantastic. It makes me miss all my Springfield journalism pals!

ANON 6:00, why do you give credit to "Mr. Davis" for hiring Joe and Christine Daus? (That news, by the way, was posted here and on other sites a couple of weeks ago.) Davis doesn't hire anyone. As a matter of fact, nobody at KSPR hires anybody there. It's all done at and by KYTV. And last I heard, Davis doesn't call any shots at KYTV.

I would assume the KSPR news director would make those decisions...

ANON 10:22 -- Well, I doubt it was the KSPR news director who transferred Michelle Sherwood from KYTV to KSPR. And it sure wasn't Mr. Davis. Mike Scott is listed as the general manager of both stations. The math is simple.

For anon 10:44 and anyone else--I want to make it perfectly clear that I was not "transferred" to KSPR. I applied there several months before the FCC approved the agreement. I love working at KY3, but I wanted to pursue new professional opportunities. Makes sense, right?

And Ron, why did you not post this on your blog?! The News-Leader scooped us on our own news? ha See you at work, B

glad to see old faces on the news. ky3 isn't the same without beason, jacob, christina king, dennis graves, lorie patton, now michelle...no one's left over there!

There is no News Director at SPR. KY dumping Sherwood over there is the latest proof of that. Congrats to Daniel Holdge for ditching the place. that leaves virtually no one there who was there just a few months ago.

Ron, do you want to respond to this?

Anonymous said...

I ain't Ron but I will respond to Anon 5:20 by arguing that there is a news director at KSPR. He is Brad Belote, another transfer from KYTV.

Some of you are giving Ron too much credit/blame. His title is "senior news producer." Check around with TV types to learn what producers do in newsrooms. They are important cogs in the wheel, but they are not the boss.

My question is: Are there any "junior" news producers at KSPR now, or is Ron "senior" by default?

Its funny that Jack said that "I've always thought he was too much of a Rob Williams wanna be." Robin Williams has done a lot of crappy movies but the ones I enjoy the most are his serious ones like What Dreams may Come, Fisher King and Dead Poets Society. And the movies I enjoy of Jim Carrey's are the serious ones like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Tom(TRCoach)

to anon 5:20--you must be a 33-er who didn't make the fall lineup.
daniel was bad...whitney's hot.
and sherwood's solid. i can guarantee no one's getting "dumped" over at kspr, people are jumping ship at ky...where's cara, jerry, tony, cristina king, dennis graves, laurie patton and more people i can't remember? not the same place it was just a few short years ago and it shows. quality at ky has been bad for a while.

Two things:

1. I happen to know Ron is "senior news producer" on account of age. Like, old age.

2. This is my favorite kind of website/blog. It runs fine without a host. :)

Jim Carey has not fallen .... he has just some bad calls ... i still think you are a comedian ..
you may not be funny most of the
time ... but we love seeing you
in happy movies ... you are a great actor and don't let anyone
tell you otherwise ...

The best part of this show is watching the dust settle.

For those who are no longer with 33 for whatever reason... I've been there. And I feel for you. Hang in there.

Folks, it's not good to get mean. Be nice. Please.

And just because you stay "anon"... doensn't mean your computer doesn't leave trax. And your words give you away.

Be smart. Be nice.

Answers to questions on this thread:

•To Anon 6:00, I hire no one. That said, I'm glad our news director (Brad Belote) and general manager (Mike Scott) hired Joe and Christine Daues. Killer hires.

•To Anon 10:44, Michelle Sherwood comes to KSPR on her own free will. No forced "transfer" involved.

•To Anon 1:23, I'm a "senior producer" by title. By duty that means I put together a 30-minute newscast (at 5) that helps set the tone and content for our other evening newscast (at 10) and our morning news show (5-7). It doesn't have anything to do with my incredibly advanced age.

•To Sniderman, Sniderman, friendly neighborhood Sniderman -- my sentiments exactly. Thank you.
