NEWS-LEADER EXODUS

What will the News-Leader do without James Goodwin? He's gained a solid rep as a good political reporter; now he's leaving to head to St. Louis, according to our sources. Not the best way to staff a looming election season.

Also leaving the paper: Nina Rao, whose name last appeared in this space on Tuesday. We'd type more, but Ms. Rao's supporters might again claim she's being pilloried. Can't have that.

Mr. Chatterhead sounds like maybe he's the one who needs to grow some skin. Along with a heart.

More depatures coming soon, so I've been told from a staff member. Some by choice ... some not ...

Re-arranging the deck chairs eh?
$10 says the cap'n doesn't go down with the ship.

If two people leaving makes an exodus, I need to go back and check my Bible! ;-)

Sounds like normal turnover for a business with hundreds of employees. When they have a dozen newsroom openings, then I'll wonder.

I was under the impression there were a dozen news room openings. Say
Mr. Anonymous aka Defender of the beast...
How many editor slots are open? How's that copy desk doin? What about moral any
snappy comeback on that little issue?

Nina Rao's departure (for a Rotary foreign study program) was broken weeks ago in the Springfield Business Journal. News of the other "half" of this "exodus" has been circulating around the capital for even longer.

Yawn.

"He's gained a solid rep as a good political reporter..."

From whom? Certainly not among his peers in the capitol press corps. I doubt Goodwin could pass an 8th grade test on the Missouri Constitution.

The News-Leader hasn't had a truly sharp knife in Jefferson City since the days of Keith White and Roger Snell. You can't name a half-dozen major stories that an N-L Capital Bureau person has broken in the past 20 years. There just aren't that many, and it's sad. The N-L pays lip service to statehouse coverage. The Star and the Post-Dispatch, and to an increasing degree, the Columbia Tribune are eating the N-L's lunch. Missy Shelton is as good as it gets for us locally. Leave it to radio...
