CERTIFIABLE

The world's a little nuts on Monday. Or perhaps that's so, and we're only seeing the nut side of life.

Chris Fluharty isn't happy. The man who would be legislator -- he's running as a third-party candidate for a north Springfield seat in the Missouri General Assembly -- was profiled in a recent Brian Lewis column, and it's the lede that torqued him off:
Chris Fluharty thinks Republican voters made a big mistake. What does he know? Fair question. Fluharty isn't a Republican. He's a member of the Constitution Party. And perhaps a little crazy.
Fluharty responds in Monday's News-Leader:
I need to thank Brian Lewis for the lesson in politics and the press. I never imagined from our interviews that he would railroad the story that way. Here, I thought it was a story on a person who, in spite of cancer, a full-time job and finishing a master's degree, still is running to give the people of the 137th District a conservative choice. Instead, I found my faith and my party in the middle of an inquisition and was found to be "crazy."
No, only "perhaps crazy." But Fluharty shows he has more than a nodding acquaintance with the crazy button:
That's OK. I bet those brave American patriots were considered crazy when they declared independence from the king. I guarantee those great Southern secessionists were seen as crazy when they stood up to a tyrannical and unconstitutional president. Thank you for putting me in such great company. If loving God and state are crazy, then I am certifiable.
Crazy, baby.

Crazy ....

End of story.

Actually, I thought it was a good and fair response from Chris. Or, is the News-Leader beyond criticism?

For once the News Leader told the truth. He and the whole Constitution Party is crazy.

Some people -- is that a straw man argument? -- watch soap operas and reality shows for entertainment. For me, politics has it all, drama, intrigue, nefarious charcters....

If only I could use a remote control to turn off the Republicans.

Part of me feels badly for Fluharty because I think he's probably trying as hard as he can with what he has. And I think he is far too easily influenced by others and some really ill-intentioned people (not Mr. Lewis) have taken advantage of that. I'm not sure I believe his insistence that he's earning his master's degree either.

I probably wouldn't have put the statement that he's probably crazy in the newspaper out of respect for his feelings even though I know he wouldn't return the favor. But yeah, he's picked up some pretty extreme and ugly political positions. Sometimes its just best to follow your mother's advice and say nothing if you can't say anything nice so I'll stop right here.

Hmmm. I took "a little bit crazy" to mean he's crazy for taking on the entrenched two-part system and standing up for his beliefs. Crazy with balls, not crazy with mental issues.

One of the things about Fluarty that used to crawl all over us was when he posted his disgust and disdain for people receiving public assistance-regardless of the circumstances of dependent individuals they were all lumped together in his book as lazy people who siphoned off the state-his response was always Get a Job-if one job isn't enough get two jobs. Questions were asked of Fluarty-what if he became seriously ill with no insurance-where would he go for $$$ and he said he would go to his church. Well now Mr Fluarty has a catastrophic disease that could conceivably cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for treatment. How many jobs will it take and how many passes of the offering tray?

Perhaps this sounds cruel...but Fluarty made quite a name for himself on the News Leader blogs as being heartless, self righteous, intolerent and downright mean at times. No one wishes him to have problems in his recovery and hopefully he will do just that. But perhaps he may walk a few miles in some different shoes for awhile.

Does Brian's column insinuate that those who run on third-party tickets - and, possibly, those who vote for them - are "crazy"?

If so, it seems odd to disparage people in such a politically-incorrect fashion...

Karma's a bitch, isn't it?

MrsThurstonHowell Funny you should say that. I have been out of work since May because of my Cancer. And have had no income. Thanks to mostly my political friends and some church friends I have yet to miss a meal or miss a bill. Never doubt the power of God to provide for my needs. We have not asked for any state help. So tell me how crow taste. Yes we will have some bills for the next 20 years, but at least I am not making you pay for my bills. You need to go and re-read what I say. I am far from heartless, just constitutional. A free ride is not in our constitution.

As for my masters send me your name and address and I'll send you an invitation for this May. I will complete my final paper this semester and then take my committee exams in the Spring. So weather you believe it not is irrelevant. I may seem heartless but at least it isn't bleeding with someone else's money.

Lastly I am the influence on others. No one has influenced or done anything to affect me other than God. So your observations are incorrect.

1. If you think your friends and church can and will pay your bills for your illness, then you clearly still have no idea how expensive this is going to be. I am rather surprised though that you don't see dependence on friends and church as an alternative path of freeloading...

You see since you obviously are not a Christian you do not understand what it is all about. I have never asked for one dime form no one. They gave because they felt led by God to do so. Your ignorance is just another example why liberals love the governemnt to do everything for them. I know how expensivie it is. It cost right around 2,000 every 2 weeks and I have to have it done for 6 months. The fact is I know I will have to pay on it for a long time, but the other fact is taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill for my illness. I have no constitutional right to free healthcare. I am not dependent on my friends but on God Mr. Anonymous. Since you are to cowardly to use your name I must assume you are a male. If you are not, then get a backbone and use your name so we can have a real discussion. At least use a screen name so I can differ you from the other anonymous cowards. Read the Book of Matthew in the Bible and you will see why I believe that I am taken care of by God. I am surprised you love paying taxes so much and that you like to pay someone elses bills. Liberals just don't get it. Their hearts bleed so much that they loose all their ability to use common sense.
