Maples, 48, has been assistant managing editor for projects and investigations at the Morning News since 2000. Before that, she served as national editor and deputy national editor. She also has worked at the Rocky Mountain News, the Albuquerque Tribune and the Springfield (Mo.) Daily News. In 1994, she was a member of the reporting team in Dallas that won a Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for "Violence Against Women: A Question of Human Rights."

Another promising hire of a former News-Leader staffer: Claudette Riley is said to be returning from Nashville to be metro editor at the News-Leader. It remains to be seen if any reporters remain for her to direct.
Pam's good people, and a helluva journalist. That's good news for the P-D newsroom.
Pam was a great colleague and teacher at 651 Boonville. Great hearing she's moving at least a little closer to home.
Now...if we can just get someone with dollars and sense to buy out Gannett and bring her back home the rest of the way. An independent, locally-owned daily with Pam in a newsroom leadership role would be great medicine for this town.
