THE SIMPSONS MOVIE ROLLOUT

Dueling premieres this Thursday night, as The Simpsons Movie came to Springfield.

At the Campbell 16, devoted fans got a day-before look, while local celebs and media types caught the movie at the Springfield 8. What we saw at the latter screening:

•Liz Delany, better-looking half of the Kevin & Liz morning show on Alice @ 95.5, spilling popcorn (but then cleaning it up as only a Mom can).

•Annie Busch, head of the Springfield-Greene County Library, graciously accepting deserved compliments for her star turn in Springfield's video entry for the Fox contest. Busch was great. The rest of the local entry is best summed up by one local media type: Worst. Episode. Ever.

•A reporter from radio station KTTS trying to interview people waiting to watch the movie. Too bad she asked Dave Hines, program director of radio station US 97. He was good enough to tell her not to waste her time or batteries.

•Speaking of US 97 -- no Spankmeister on hand to liven up the festivities.

•The Springfield 8 screening was held in a too-big room. A couple hundred people in a room meant for twice as many bodies made turnout seem dissatisfying.

Oh yeah -- the movie. Worth the wait. Marge says "goddamn." Applause at the end. Smiling faces. And the commemorative poster is definitely a keeper.

Ah, it all comes clear to me now. You took the KSPR job so you could get back on the swag wagon.

And kudos for KSFX/KOLR for their coverage tonight. They were live at Springfield 8 and even had some of their peeps there!

Wow, local celebs. Can you feel the heat?

Seeing the Simpsons Movie in Springfield is considered "swag"??? They sure don't make swag like they used to.

Oh Ron you are such a major media player using your Springfield33 status to get free Simpsons tix.

Glad you made sure we knew which venue you caught the movie at; we wouldn't want to confuse you with regular folks.

was the bachelor there?

Did Chatter just jump the shark?

The haters are crawling out of their dank holes. It's pretty pathetic that they've got nothing better to do.

Ah, haters. Ron, you need to take it as a compliment that they've wiped the Cheetos off their chests and clicked away from their Googling pictures of Jessica Biel's butt to comment on your blog!

The one thing that struck me from the entry for the movie contest was that once we lost the spin from the CVB was "well, we accomplished what we wanted which was visibility for our Springfield."

Wasn't the point to WIN? Shouldn't we have done an entry with the intent of WINNING? Go in without an attitude of trying to win and you'll lose.

Sorry, Lombardi, but winning is neither the only thing, nor is it everything. There are times in the practice of public relations when a desirable measure of victory is realized just by being recognized as a competitor.

A desirable measure, perhaps. But the goal? Why shoot for less than a victory? You can be happy at not winning because you gained exposure but going into something with the attitude you only want to come up close is defeatist in nature.

They are not mutually exclusive goals. You can go into the effort with multiple goals - winning, exposure, etc., and still recognize the fulfillment of what was accomplished even without the big prize. No one involved approached this with a "defeatist" attitude. Quite the contrary, actually.

Geez. Get over it. It was a boring contest and our entry was boring. All the entires I saw were boring. Who cares?

I happened to make the screening at the "8" myself. My favorite line from the film:

Abraham Simpson: "Homer, what the hell are you doing?"

Homer Simpson: "I'm risking my life, for people I hate, for reasons I don't quite understand!"
