This is why newspapers are failing: Gannett CEO Craig Dubow was paid $3.1 million for 2008 and awarded $875K in a bonus, despite a 79% stock plunge and huge layoffs for thousands and mandatory unpaid furloughs for everyone who's left.

If contracts are suddenly worthless, what's next? The Constitution? The Bill of Rights?

Anon 8:43, Like everyone, I'm not too crazy about these bonuses, but, having said that, let me also say I was very opposed to the bailout to begin with.
The bigger question is why did Chris Dodd amend the legislation allowing those bonuses to be paid? He's admitted, finally that he did that.
As a result of these being paid, we now have a Democrat Congress passing unconstitutional legislation taxing those specific bonuses at 90%.
Seems to me that this was all orchestrated by the White House, Treasury and Dems on Capitol Hill to open the door to even more government control.
Whether you guys like it or not, these bonuses being paid are of Obama's doing. The days of always blaming Bush are over.
Actually, Bush did very little, himself, to lead this country during his eight years...which is no small reason why Obama inherited such a mess to start with. (It's the countless assholes Bush installed into positions of power who REALLY screwed our national pooch, AssPat. There may be decades, or lifetimes, of blame yet to come for those folks.)
Oh, Christ on a crutch, I didn't know Bush had a damn thing to do with Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. Nor did I realize Bush demanded that lower income people be GIVEN mortgages they couldn't afford.

No, I'm sure both sides have blame, but I am sick and tired of the Democrats NOT getting the blame.
If a person- black, yellow, red, orange or white- can't afford a house, a loan, a car or whatever, they shouldn't get the loan. Liberal "feelings" of helping the poor and unqualified get into houses has caused this economic tumble worldwide.
