Springfield police report a slight increase in traffic fatalities for the year -- but a significant decrease in the number of injury crashes.
According to a city news release, there have been:
•Fifteen fatal crashes through Sept. 30, an increase of one from the same nine-month period in 2004. That, by the way, is a 7% jump.
•There have been 1,607 injury crashes through the first nine months of 2005 (man, that seems like a lot -- about 178 a month, or nearly six injury wrecks a day). Last year there were 1,879 injury wrecks in the first nine months -- about seven a day, on average.
On average this year, there have been about 22 wrecks a day investigated by city police.
