BONGALICIOUS

Earlier this year the U.S. Supreme Court heard a free-speech case involving a student holding a sign proclaiming "Bong Hits 4 Jesus."

The Washington Post reports that Justice Samuel Alito -- a pivotal vote -- seems to be a saving grace for First Amendment fanboys and girls:
"I'm a very strong believer in the First Amendment and the right of people to speak and to write," Alito said in response to a question of "where's the line" on what can be posted on the Internet. "I would be reluctant to support restrictions on what people could say."

The newest justice, who was protective of speech rights as an appellate judge, added that "some restrictions have been held to be consistent with the First Amendment, but it's very dangerous for the government to restrict speech."
That sound you hear is the faint "bong" of liberal heads exploding at the thought of conservative Sam Alito being on their side.

That's because he doesn't want his favorite porn site, Jesus Loves Porn, to go away. (Been saving that one up for a while, go ahead... click it!)

God bless, Alito. God save the court.

And thank you, of course, Jesus.

Hmmm. I don't really get it. Why do Cons get blamed for blocking free speech? It seems like press rights have been supported by Republicans more than dems lately.

Well Darin if one were to look at the US government for the last 6 years you may find a clue as to why people view "cons" with such loathing.

It's just a wild guess.

D'oh ;) Isn't it conservative to want to protect free speech?

It only makes sense that a conservative justice would support our constitutional rights and that a liberal justice, as the trend among liberals would show, would seek to restrict same.

Fairness doctrine, anyone?

Liberals should take a deep breath here. Protection of constitutional rights is a conservative trait - or was at one time. Neither party has a lock on it, although if one reads the constitution, votes to protect the given rights would seem a no-brainer.

That breeze you feel is civil libertarians everywhere breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Fixed it for ya...:)

What a monumental waste of Supreme Court time. This shouldn't have even BEEN an issue in the first place.

Alito is more likely a libertarian. Unlike politicians, justices aren't supposed to "toe the party line." We should know how they vote before they vote. Alito is doing his job. It would be nice if all justices voted this way.
